Lanzarote is one of those islands that surprises everyone, including the little ones. Its volcanic landscapes, white and black sand beaches, and natural caves make every excursion a small adventure. If you are traveling with family, here are the 10 places you shouldn't miss.
1. Timanfaya National Park
The Fire Mountains are Lanzarote's most characteristic image and a place that children love. The park has a bus route through the volcanic area (the Volcano Route) where you can see live geothermal heat demonstrations: water is poured into a crack and steam comes out, or a branch is inserted and it catches fire. It's spectacular. Book access in advance, as capacity is limited.
2. Jameos del Agua
A volcanic cave on the seashore with an interior lake where the Lanzarote blind crab (Munidopsis polymorpha) lives, a unique species in the world. The tour is simple, accessible, and fascinating for all ages. Inside there is also a garden and a natural auditorium carved into the rock, designed by César Manrique.
3. Cueva de los Verdes
Very close to Jameos del Agua, this 6-kilometer long lava cave is one of the longest in the world. The guided tour lasts approximately one hour and covers the most impressive passages, with light shows that enhance the shapes and colors of the rock. At the end there is a surprise that we will not reveal here.
4. Guinate Tropical Park
A park of exotic birds and animals in the north of the island, with more than 1,300 animals of 300 different species. Children can see flamingos, toucans, parrots, and primates in a spectacular natural setting on the northern cliffs. It is quiet, well-maintained, and perfect for a family morning.
5. Playa Blanca
The town of Playa Blanca has one of Lanzarote's most beautiful and tranquil beaches, ideal for families with young children. The promenade is very well equipped, there are restaurants for all tastes, and the water is usually calmer than in other areas of the island. It is also the departure point for ferries to Fuerteventura.
6. Papagayo Beaches
A group of protected coves in the south of the island, with white sand and transparent waters, considered among the best beaches in the Canary Islands. Access is via a dirt track (a small entrance fee to the natural park must be paid) and they are not overcrowded. Perfect for a relaxing beach day with the whole family.
7. El Charco de los Clicos (Green Lake)
An emerald green lagoon trapped between black volcanic rocks, at the foot of the El Golfo volcano. The contrast of colors is stunning and the photos are spectacular. It's a quick stop, just 20 or 30 minutes, but one that no traveler should skip. The Green Lake is protected, so you cannot go down to the shore: the view is from above.
8. César Manrique Foundation
The studio house of the most important Lanzarote artist in history, built on a lava flow with volcanic bubbles converted into rooms. It is a unique space that combines art, architecture, and nature. Older children usually enjoy it a lot, especially the underground rooms.
9. Aquapark Costa Teguise
If you want a day of pure fun for the children, Aquapark Costa Teguise is the option. Slides, wave pools, and a children's area. It is on the east coast of the island, in the tourist area of Costa Teguise, and is perfect for breaking up cultural visits and letting the little ones let off steam.
10. Puerto del Carmen
Lanzarote's largest tourist hub has a long and calm beach (Playa Grande), a promenade full of restaurants, and constant animation. It is a good base point for exploring the island and also a pleasant place to end the day with a family dinner by the sea.
How to get around Lanzarote with children
Lanzarote has no train or metro, and the bus service (ARRECIFE/DAMAS) does not cover all areas frequently enough for families with children. The most comfortable way to visit several points in one day is to rent a car or hire a private transfer.
