How long does it really take to get out of an airport?

From the moment the plane lands until you are on the road, it can take anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour. We tell you what influences this and how to save time.

When planning a trip, almost everyone calculates the flight duration. What few people consider is the time spent from when the plane lands until they leave the airport. And that margin can make the difference between starting a vacation calmly or in a rush.

In this guide, we explain, phase by phase, how long it actually takes to leave an airport and what you can do to reduce the wait.

The arrival phases, one by one

Leaving an airport is not a single step, but a chain of small times that add up:

  • Taxiing and disembarkation: between 5 and 20 minutes. Depends on whether the plane arrives at a jet bridge (finger) or a remote stand with a bus.
  • Terminal walk: 5 to 15 minutes walking, depending on the airport size.
  • Passport control: only for flights from outside the Schengen area. Can range from 5 minutes to over 45 minutes during peak hours.
  • Checked baggage claim: usually between 15 and 40 minutes from the plane's arrival.
  • Exit and access to transport: taxi queues, car rental counters, or finding the bus stop.

Estimated times according to trip type

SituationApproximate time until departure
Domestic or Schengen flight, hand luggage only15 to 25 minutes
Domestic or Schengen flight, with checked luggage30 to 50 minutes
Non-Schengen flight (e.g., United Kingdom), with luggage45 to 75 minutes
Peak hour or several flights landing at onceAdd between 15 and 30 minutes
Families with children, strollers or special luggageAdd between 10 and 20 minutes

In airports with high tourist traffic such as Gran Canaria (LPA) or Tenerife South (TFS), Saturdays and Sundays during high season concentrate many arrivals and times tend to lengthen.

Factors that lengthen the wait

In addition to the type of flight, there are details that add minutes without one realizing:

  • Special luggage (surfboards, bicycles, golf clubs, or baby strollers), which usually comes out on a different belt and later.
  • Chain delays: if the flight arrives late, it may coincide with others and saturate passport control.
  • Taxi queues during peak arrival hours, which can exceed 20 or 30 minutes.
  • Car rental procedures: counters with queues, contract review, deposit, and vehicle search in the parking lot. Easily an extra 30 to 60 minutes.

How to reduce departure time

You cannot control passport control, but you can control many other things:

  • Travel only with hand luggage when possible.
  • Sit in the front rows of the plane to disembark earlier.
  • Have your documents ready before reaching control.
  • Download the airport app to check the assigned baggage belt.
  • And, above all, arrange transportation before landing.

Private transfer: the last leg without waits

Of all the phases, the only one you can completely eliminate is waiting for transportation. With a private transfer booked in advance, the driver tracks the flight in real-time and adjusts pickup if there's a delay. Upon exiting to the arrivals area, they will be waiting for you with a sign with your name, help you with your luggage, and you'll head directly to your accommodation.

At Million Routes we work with a fixed closed price at the time of booking and included waiting time, so that neither a slow passport control nor a delayed bag costs you extra money.

Frequently asked questions about airport departure times

How long does it take on average to leave an airport?

For a domestic or Schengen flight with checked luggage, it usually takes between 30 and 50 minutes. If the flight is from outside Schengen, allow 45 to 75 minutes.

How long does checked luggage take to come out?

The first bags usually appear between 10 and 20 minutes after the plane stops, and the last ones can take up to 40 minutes.

What happens if my driver arrives and I'm still inside?

In a private transfer with flight tracking, the driver already accounts for that margin. The included waiting time covers disembarkation, control, and baggage claim.

Do I need to go through passport control in the Canary Islands from the UK?

Yes. Flights from the United Kingdom are non-Schengen flights, so there is passport control upon arrival, which can add time during peak hours.
