Tenerife: two airports, two climates and a very different island depending on where you stay
Tenerife is the largest island in the Canary Islands and also one of the most varied. The south concentrates the main sun and beach destinations, such as Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas, and Los Cristianos. The north offers a quieter and greener environment, with Puerto de la Cruz, La Laguna, or Santa Cruz de Tenerife as main references. Between both stands Teide National Park, the highest peak in Spain.
The island has two airports: Tenerife South (TFS), mainly used for international flights, and Tenerife North (TFN), specialized in national and inter-island connections. Choosing the right airport can save more than an hour of travel time. It depends on where you're staying. TFS (Tenerife South) is the airport for Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje. TFN (Tenerife North) is closest to Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz. If you land at TFS but your hotel is in the north, you add over 80 km of transfer. Check this before booking your flight.
There's no direct bus line to Teide from Los Cristianos, Las Américas or Costa Adeje. Options are organized excursion, car rental or round-trip private transfer. If you want scheduling flexibility for sunrise trips or visiting the observatory, transfer is the only option without depending on fixed schedules.
From the south (Los Cristianos) to the north (Puerto de la Cruz) is about 85 km on the TF-1/TF-5 highway, with an average time of 1 hour and 20 minutes. It's a distance that makes north and south practically independent destinations, not areas that can be comfortably visited on the same day.
Yes. From Los Cristianos Port, Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas ferries depart to La Gomera (35-50 mins), La Palma and El Hierro. If you have a ferry early in the morning, private transfer from the hotel to the port is the safest option to not miss the boat.
It's a journey of over 80 km and 1 hour 20 minutes with no direct bus. The usual combination with public transport requires passing through Santa Cruz with a change. If you have, for example, a hotel in Puerto de la Cruz and want to spend a day in Costa Adeje or Siam Park, a round-trip private transfer is the most comfortable option to go without a car.
